How Funny is Mr. Popper's Penguin?

I haven't personally read the children's book Mr. Popper's Penguin since I wasn't born around 1930's.But if you've read the book, just allow me to ask you how funny Mr. Popper's penguin is? Well, as for the movie adaptation I personally believe that with Jim Carrey on the title role this is definitely going to be a funny.
